âWow!â Benny cried. âHowâd you do that?â
Once again Henry just smiled. âMagic,â he said.
âNow I understand,â Jessie remarked. âYou can tell us what these things are for. And you can perform the trick. You just canât show us how they work.â
âYouâre honoring the magicianâs code,â Benny said.
âThatâs exactly right,â said Henry.
âWhat are you supposed to do if you goof up on stage?â Benny asked. âIn front of all those people staring at you?â
âThat thought scares me,â Henry admitted. âBut you know what the Amazing Arthur told me?â
âWhat?â his siblings said at once.
âTo just keep going. Keep up the patter.â
âPatter?â Benny asked.
âThatâs where you say things like âLadies and gentlemen!â or âHowâre all you folks doing today on this splendid afternoon?â You keep talking so they donât notice you dropped the deck of cards or forgot to roll the dice.â
Jessie said, âPatter away, Henry.â
âI need to practice that too,â he said.
Violet went to the center of the stage where she could look out over the rows of seats. A huge clock was high up on the far wall. âHey everyone,â she called. âItâs eleven thirty. This place opens in half an hour. Weâre running out of time. If we donât find the Amazing Arthur, Mrs. Oliver will cancel the magic show! She wonât even let Captain Cannon take it over.â
A sudden crash echoed through the empty auditorium.
Benny jumped. âWhat was that?â
âIt sounded like it came from over there,â Jessie said.
The Aldens carefully stepped backstage. A large mirror had fallen to the floor and shattered.
Thousands of sharp pieces of glass were strewn across the floor.
Jessie grabbed the back of Bennyâs shirt. âCareful!â she said.
âIs that the mirror from the shop?â Violet wondered.
âUh-oh, I think it is,â said Henry. âThe one the Amazing Arthur suddenly appeared in front of the other day. I still donât know what trick this mirror is used for. He didnât explain.â
Jessie carefully pushed the toe of her tennis shoe through the broken glass. âI bet itâs for the new trick he was going to unveil. We didnât see himâor that personâthe other night carrying in a big mirror. But if this is it, the Amazing Arthur mustâve been planning to be at the magic show, even if itâs held here at the community center.â
Henry said, âThe Amazing Arthur wouldnât have left town if he was planning to be at the show, right?â
âRight!â Jessie agreed.
Benny stepped around the shattered mirror and into the hallway by the door where they had entered. He held the door wide open. The bright sunlight revealed something new.
Spots of red paint had dribbled from the mirror out through the door. âSomeone spilled paint,â Violet said.
Jessie leaned closer. âUh, thatâs not paint,â she said. âI think itâs blood. Itâs a deep red, kinda oozy-looking.â
âBlood?â Benny cried.
Henry bent down for a better look. âI think itâs blood too. Whoever was just here must have knocked over the mirror.â
âAnd must have gotten cut on the glass,â Jessie said.
âBut who?â Violet asked. âI hope itâs not a serious cut.
